- Story Text: Protesters throw red paint at U.S. embassy and new
central bank chief appointed.
Leftist protesters pelted the gates of the U.S.
embassy in Manila with rotten eggs during a lightning rally
on Monday (July 4), catching policemen guarding the empty
embassy off guard.
Policemen handcuffed a camera man and took him to a
police station after presenting a press card which they
believed to be fake.
"Because of the situation now, we are always alert but
sometimes, like what happened today, all of a sudden they
just started throwing something. We were caught off guard.
We are here to secure the U.S. embassy." said Captain Chit
Santos.
The U.S. embassy is closed on July 4, as Americans
celebrate Independence Day, but, in the Philippines, it is
marked as the Philippine-American Friendship Day.
Red paint on the embassy wall were immediately washed
off.
A new central bank chief has been appointed today.
Armand Tetangco Jr. took an oath in the presence of
President Gloria Arroyo and Finance Chief Cesar Purisima.
After the inauguration the Finance Chief Cesar Purisima
said economic reform was on course.
"There is no politics to taxes and collecting of
duties. It is necessary. It is important. Its step number
one in our economic reform agenda and without it, I think
we will not be able to deliver the promises that are
necessary to improve the competitiveness of the country,
such as better infrastructure, better education and better
social services", Purisima said.
