- Story Text: Italians rally in support of abducted journalist in
Iraq.
Close to two hundred people gathered in front of
Rome's city hall on the Capitoline Hill on Saturday
(February 5) to show solidarity with the Italian hostage
Giuliana Sgrena, kidnapped in Iraq on Friday (February 4).
Romans carried torches and candles as a large poster of
Sgrena was unfolded on the city hall.
Sgrena's partner, Pierluigi Scolari, arrived at the
rally and said his wife was trying to tell the story of
Iraq from its citizens point of view.
"Guiliana was trying to tell everything from the point
of view of the Iraqi people, that's why she was taking her
car and going around Iraq and that's what made her fall in
this ambush. On the other hand she always said you couldn't
tell the stories of the country staying in a hotel room"
said Scolari.
Also in the crowd were Simona Torretta and Simona Pari,
two aid workers who were held hostage in Iraq for three
weeks. Their release last September caused a national joy.
In the first abduction of a foreigner since the Iraqi
elections, Sgrena, a correspondent for Rome-based Communist
newspaper Il Manifesto, was snatched from the street while
she was interviewing people near Baghdad University.
Her kidnap has caused nationwide emotion and
dominated news bulletins, where it knocked news of Pope
John Paul's health off the top spot for the first time
since Tuesday night, when the pontiff was rushed to
hospital with breathing problems.
A little-known Iraqi group, the Islamic Jihad
Organisation, said in a Web statement it had taken Sgrena
hostage and set a 72-hour deadline for Italy to remove its
troops but did not make a specific threat against her. It
was not possible to verify the statement.
