- Story Text: European leaders arrive at Meise Place ahead of
crucial summit.
European leaders arrived at Meise Palace in Belgium
on Thursday (June 16) for pre-summit talks to resolve the
impasse over the EU budget.
Among those who attended the talks were Croatian
President Ivo Sanader, Italian Prime Minister Silvio
Berlusconi and the Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso.
Edmund Stoiber, German Regional Prime Minister of
Bavaria, spoke to the media on his arrival, "We don't have
any room for manoeuvre, we have to do everything to end up
with a more solid budget when we cross the border. When we
cut all over the place in the national countries than we
also have to cut in Europe," he said.
Slovakian Prime Minister Mikulas Dzurinda was asked
whether it he thought it was possible to arrive at a deal
on the budget said, "This is one of the hottest items which
will be discussed and I think my colleague Blair is keen
for a compromise, so I believe in a final compromise."
One of the last to arrive was Commission President Jose
Manuel Barroso.
Asked whether he thought an agreement on the 2007-2013
budget was within reach, Barroso told reporters, "It's very
difficult but it's possible. We are in a crucial moment but
I hope all leaders are really aware of the responsibilities
that they have. I make an appeal to the sense of
responsibility and the sense of compromise, that everyone
has to move, so that everybody in the end can be happy."
Dutch Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende, rejected the
latest proposal for the European Union's long-term budget,
saying it still meant the Netherlands was the biggest
per-capita contributor. He said he wanted that changed,
especially after the rejection by the Dutch of the European
Union's constitution in a referendum at the start of the
month.
