- Story Text: Both supporters and foes of the Yugoslav President
Slobodan Milosevic said on Tuesday (September 19) they
believed they would be the ones to win Sunday's ballot.
Rival opponents of Yugoslav President Slobodan
Milosevic on Tuesday urged Serbs to take part in elections due
on Sunday, saying a large turnout would make it more difficult
for him to cheat.
We should come out to the polling stations en masse and
prevent, with our votes, another great election fraud -- the
fraud of the century, the presidential candidate of the main
opposition bloc, Vojislav Kostunica told a large pre-poll
rally in the southern town of Nis.
Zoran Djindjic, the leader of the Democratic Party and
campaign manager of the Democratic Opposition of Serbia (DOS)
bloc, told a news conference earlier they expected a landslide
for their presidential candidate Vojislav Kostunica.
He said, we expect Milosevic to announce his victory at 10
p.m. (2000 GMT) but added the oposition would not make any
premature announcements.
Overnight we will have absolutely reliable information on
a sample of polling stations on how the people have voted in
places where they have really voted, Djinjdjic said. And
during the night the people of Serbia will know the real
results, he said.
In Belgrade, the Serbian Renewal Movement, the only
opposition party not to join forces behind Kostunica, issued a
similar plea at its last pre-election convention. Party
leader Vuk Draskovic sent his pre-election message by
telephone from Montenegro, where he has been holed up since
June after what he said was a second attempt on his life by
Belgrade. Let Serbia turn out en masse on Septemebr 24 and
vote for itself, its children and its freedom, Draskovic told
some 3,000 delegates in Belgrades Sava conference centre
gathered to support the partys presidential candidate Vojislav
Mihailovic.
Opinion polls give Mihailovic, the low-key mayor of
Belgrade, a fraction of the support seen for Kostunica, who
also leads over Milosevic and the other two candidates.
The latest, issued on Tuesday by the Belgrade-based Centre
for Policy Studies among 1,640 people, said 41 percent backed
Kostunica, 20 percent Milosevic and five percent for
Mihailovic.
Earlier on Tuesday Yugoslav Foreign Minister Zivadin
Jovanovic told a rally in the central Serbian town of Jagodina
that the proud Serbs would not be lured by candies from the
West.
Yesterday, European Union ministers offered us candies if
we are good children and accept their dictate, he said on one
of the final rallies of the Socialist Party of Serbia -
Jugoslav Left coalition. But a dignified Serb will not take a
lollypop.
