- Story Text: The world's largest plane is expected to leave southern
Germany for Oman with some 180 tons of Ready-to-Eat Meals for
the United States armed forces involved in operation Enduring
Freedom.
The huge cargo plane landed at Germany's Stuttgart
airport on Friday afternoon (December 28) where more than 180
pallets of MREs
(Meals Ready to Eat) were loaded into its hold.
Rex Totty, Commander of the U.S. Navy Reserve said, "This
is an international effort against terrorism. (The mission
also) underscores the importance of Americas foreign presence
in Germany and the fact that our host nation is very important
for the support of the American military and particularly in
support of Enduring Freedom," adding "It is going to be sent
to the Arabian Gulf from here."
According to a spokesman at Stuttgart's U.S. European
Command (EUCOMM), the plane was expected to depart for Oman.
The delivery was organised by a Stuttgart-based charter
company.
Designed in Kiev in what is now the Ukraine, the Antonov
was named after airplane constructor Oleg Antonov.
It was grounded after the collapse of the Soviet Union.
The present Antonov cargo plane is an updated version of a
plane designed to transport the former Soviet Unions Buran
space shuttle.
The six-engined Antonov can carry up to 250 tons, more
than twice the load of a Boeing 747 jumbojet which holds up to
110 tons.
A wingspan of 88.4 metres and its length of 84.4 metres
mean the Antonov occupied several regular parking positions at
Stuttgart airport.
