- Story Text: Aircraft have been brought in to help bring under control a huge forest fire on France's west coast, which forced the evacuation by sea of thousands of holidaymakers trapped on beaches by the flames.
SYNOPSIS: High winds fanned the fire over an area of more than 1,000 hectares (2,500 acres) along the Atlantic coast. Fire officials said the blaze could not spread any further, but was still not under control. They said that, despite using three aircraft to scoop water from lakes and streams and to pour it on the fire, the flames would not die out until the wind dropped.
On Friday, a flotilla of small craft evacuated holidaymakers from beaches where they had been trapped by the spreading flames. Many of those rescued were children from nearby summer holiday camps.
