- Story Text: Bayer Leverkusen look set to make several changes for
Tuesday's Champions League match at home to Newcastle United
as they set their sights firmly on domestic survival at the
expense of progress in Europe.
"We can't let ourselves be sidetracked by the Champions
League. Whoever needs a rest, whether mentally or physically,
will get it," commercial manager Rainer Calmund said on
Monday.
Leverkusen, who are only clear of the German first
division's relegation zone on goal difference, sacked coach
Klaus Toppmoeller on Sunday after five consecutive Bundesliga
losses.
His replacement Thomas Hoerster, promoted from the club's
youth section, is expected to rest several first-choice
players.
Leverkusen, Champions League finalists last year, have
lost both their second phase Group A games so far and must
beat Newcastle to keep alive any realistic hopes of progress
to the quarter-finals.
But despite facing a weakened Newcastle side without
leading strikers Alan Shearer and Craig Bellamy, Calmund
suggested the match is an inconvenient side-show for
Leverkusen.
"Newcastle don't interest me at the moment. We are in
grave danger of relegation from the Bundesliga and are
fighting for our existence," he told a news conference.
Calmund said Germany midfielder Bernd Schneider would
certainly be rested.
"Schneider will not be playing a sixth game in two weeks,"
he said of the midfielder who played in Germany's 3-1 loss to
Spain on Wednesday.
Germany striker Oliver Neuville and defender Carsten
Ramelow are also expected to be rested on Tuesday. Ramelow had
a poor game on Saturday after also struggling against Spain in
midweek.
Argentine defender Diego Placente and Bulgarian striker
Dimitar Berbatov look likely to start on the bench.
The changes should give new recruits, Brazilian defender
Cris and Poland midfielder Radoslav Kaluzny, a chance to press
their case, while Turkey midfielder Yildiray Basturk,
suspended in the Bundesliga, should return.
Calmund, who confirmed Hoerster as coach at least until
the end of the season, said the club were additionally looking
for a director of sport.
He said he had contacted current Greek national trainer
Otto Rehhagel, but the man who steered Werder Bremen and
Kaiserslautern to the Bundesliga title was not available.
