- Story Text: Indonesia's poultry farmers desperate to contain
outbreak of bird flu.
A week after Indonesia confirmed the latest outbreak
of bird flu in two of its provinces, the country's farmers
are now struggling to contain the avian disease from
spreading.
Bird flu has re-emerged in Indonesia's South Sulawesi
province and West Java province since the start of the
year, prompting the government to slaughter affected fowl.
Farmers in Sidrap district, one of South Sulawesi's
hardest hit districts, had been collecting more than 3,000
dead chickens daily, leaving most farms with only few, if
not any healthy chickens left to tend.
The latest data compiled by South Sulawesi's livestock
department on Tuesday (March 22) showed that more than 8
million chickens were detected to have been infected by the
virus in five districts.
More than 9 million chickens in six other districts
were also feared to be infected, while less than one
million have so far been declared disease-free in 10 more
districts.
Agriculture and health authorities have isolated the
province, banning the trade of its poultry products,
shortly after it confirmed the H5N1 strain, which can be
deadly to humans. No cases, however, had been reported in
people.
Sporadic outbreaks of bird flu in fowl have hit parts
of the sprawling archipelago since the disease emerged in
late 2003, but authorities have insisted that overall the
deadly disease is under control.
The government has also ordered isolation and culling
in the affected areas, and vaccinations in areas in a five
kilometre distance, to prevent bird flu outbreaks from
spreading.
More than a million doses of vaccine had been
distributed, but local authorities have said more are
needed.
Meanwhile, inter-regional transportation, irregular
vaccinations and porous borders may have caused the disease
to spread.
The Indonesian government has said bird flu is endemic
and that it would take years to fully stamp out the H5N1
strain that has swept large parts of Asia since late 2003.
The H5N1 strain can jump from birds to humans and can
be deadly. It has killed 34 Vietnamese, 12 Thais and one
Cambodian.
