- Story Text: The funeral of one of France's best-loved veteran film actors, Michel Simon, took place at La Madeleine Church in Paris on Wednesday (4 June).
Many hundreds of mourners -- including leading members of the French entertainment world such as director Marcel Carne -- turned out for the solemn occasion.
Simon -- a leading light in French films for over 40 year -- died in a clinic near Paris last Friday (30 May after several weeks of illness. He was aged 80.
His massive physical appearance, huge distinctive france high-pitched voice had made him one of France's most individual and instantly recognisable actors.
Simon's first major screen appearance came in 1930, with a repeat of his stage success as the comic Clocio in "Jean de la lune". He went on to appear in a series of major pre-war French films, including Jean Renoir's "Boudu sauve des eaux", Jean Vigo's "L'Atalante' and two of Marcel Carne's classic productions, "Drole de drame" and "quai des brumes". After the Second World War, he collected two major acting awards at the Locarno and Venice film festivals of 1947 and 1950.
In recent years, his most successful role was that of a rough but sentimental old man in the highly acclaimed French film "Le vieil homme et l'enfant."
