- Story Text: Officials from 36 countries, mainly from Asia and the Pacific region, began a week-long conference on Monday (25 February) in Bangkok, Thailand to explore ways of dealing with the current world energy crisis.
The conference, opened by Thai Industry Minister, Osoth Kosin, is being held under the auspices of the United Nations Economic Commission for Asia and the Far East (ECAFE).
In his opening address, Mr. Kosin said the Thai government felt the conference was of greater significance than others held on energy in the last 25 years.
"It comes at a time when the whole world seems to be fraught with difficulty and uncertainty created by the monetary and energy crises of such gigantic proportions that small individual nations are left bewildered to cope with," the Industry Ministry declared.
During the conference, the delegates will use as a basis of discussion three documents drawn up by ECAFE on the impact of the crisis and suggestions for easing it.
These contain proposals for developing local energy resources, a review of the energy situation in ECAFE countries, and a study of increased oil prices on different sectors of the Asian economy.
The documents lay particular stress on the exploitation of hydro-electric power resources of the major Asian rivers.
