- Story Text: Memorial service held in Cairo for victims of Sharm
el-Sheikh air crash
About 500 people from the French community attended
a mass on Thursday (January 8) at the Holy Family Church in
Maadi in memory of the victims of Sharm el-Sheikh aircrash.
Earlier more than 100 mourners attended a
cross-religious service in the Red Sea resort, followed by
a memorial at sea. The French Foreign Minister Dominique de
Villepin, who was also in Egypt, said his government would
do all it could to support the victims and families of
those involved.
Of those who died, 134 were French. About 122 of their
relatives attended, travelling to and from Egypt on a
French government-chartered plane on, reportedly
accompanied by doctors and grief counsellors.
After the services the Moslem community in Sharm
el-Sheikh held prayers in memory of the victims.
The names of the victims were inscribed on a marble
monument at the site.
