- Story Text: The number of deaths in the Philippines due to
flooding, landslides and rain triggered by Typhoon Chata'an
has risen to 22, disaster officials have said.
Philippine disaster officials said on Tuesday (July 9)
that 37 people have been injured and three were missing,
including two South Korean tourists whose boat capsized in
Batangas province south of Manila.
More than 24,000 people have fled their homes and sought
shelter in evacuation centres in the capital Manila and the
northern province of Pampanga.
Most of the houses in Pampanga remain submerged in
floodwater.
The Philippine weather bureau said Typhoon Chata'an
intensified on Monday as it moved away from the Philippines
towards southern Japan.
Packing winds of up to 180 km per hour (112 mph) and gusts
of 215 kph (134 mph), Chata'an was 1,180 km (740 miles)
east-northeast of Basco, Batanes in the north of the main
Luzon island as of 0200 GMT on Monday, the weather bureau
said.
Nearly 15,000 people were forced to flee their homes in
Manila and nearby provinces when Chata'an dumped rains,
causing floods and landslides, across wide areas of Luzon.
Disaster officials said flooding in most parts of Manila
subsided on Monday, allowing some evacuees to return to their
homes.
In the town of Guagua in Pampanga, residents used canoes
and logs as a means of transportation.
But many government offices and schools here remain
closed.
Officials said some parts of Northern Luzon like Bataan,
Bulacan, Pampanga and Zambales provinces remained flooded by
up to waist-deep water on Monday afternoon.
Meteorologists said they expected more rains in the next
few days to hit the west of Luzon, including Manila, following
the formation of a new tropical depression west of Batanes.
Agriculture officials said monsoon rains triggered by
Chata'an did not damage crops on Luzon, the country's rice
basket.
