- Story Text: New Yorkers raced shopping carts through the streets in the second
annual Idiotarod.
New Yorkers braved frigid winter temperatures to take place in a
mock version of the Alaskan Iditarod - the Idiotarod on Saturday (January 29).
Unlike its near-namesake the Iditarod, the Idiotarod does not involve
dogs and sleds mushing trough the snow. Instead, racers opt to pull their own
cart, a shopping cart.
Teams, five members each, roped themselves to the shaky carts and raced
through the streets of Brooklyn and Manhattan.
While snow and ice provided natural obstacles, teams were encouraged to
sabotage one and another using any means necessary.
Said racer Ellen Smith, "It's kind of a lot of mayhem and fun, I
guess. You get to sabotage people. It's legitimate sabotage."
Methods of mayhem varied from the simple, to the extravagant.
Racer Matt Donnelly commented, "I think we have some good sabotage
skills. We've got some marbles, smoke screens, oil slicks. This is good
stuff."
On their way to the finish line, teams were required to make two pit
stops at local bars. While some teams took the opportunity to rest and warm
up, others found that a little alcohol was all they needed to refuel.
After their rest, it was back to the streets where drunken teams dodged
people, traffic, and snowballs from onlookers.
The race to the finish line was neck and neck, but musher John Hartley
took the honours.
Hartley said, "It's hard work out there. We had to run hard, fight
our way through traffic, and sabotage some other teams as well."
A cash award went to the first place team, and prizes were handed out
to teams who proved to be the most creativity in cart design - and in sabotage
techniques.
