- Story Text: German jobless rise to over five million.
Germany's Federal Labour Office said on Wednesday
(February 2) the January unadjusted jobless total rose
573,000 month-on-month to a record 5.037 million.
"Unemployment has not increased but it is now fully
documented, including social welfare recipients who are
able to work, plus their dependants," the head of the
Federal Labour Office, Frank-Juergen Weise told a news
conference in Nuremberg.
"The amount of people looking for work has therefore
not increased but has uncovered silent reserves," Weise
said.
On an adjusted basis, January unemployment increased by
227,000 to 4.714 million.
In Berlin, Economy and Labour Minister Wolfgang Clement
conceded that "we have just crossed the five million margin
which of course is a frightening figure."
"However," Clement added, "I am warning all those who
feel responsible or co-responsible to get into a state of
shock -- apart from the hysteric remarks and sometimes
absurd historic comparisons," referring to comments by the
opposition Christian Democrat Union (CDU).
Volker Kauder, newly elected CDU secretary general,
told a news conference in Berlin that "the politics of this
government has led to the highest unemployment in Germany
since World War II."
"Without the statistics tricks of the past years this
figure would be even higher. The politics of this
government and this chancellor (Gerhard Schroeder) is
dividing the country into people with opportunities and
into more and more people without opportunities."
Kauder added: "the chancellor is the opportunities
killer for many people in this country."
Data showed German unemployment rose in January to the
highest recorded level since 1933.
