- Story Text: The winner of the 50th Eurovision song contest,
Greece's Helena Paparizou, was given a warm welcome when
she returned to Athens on Monday.
The Greek winnner of the 2005 Eurovision song
contest Helena Paparizou, draped in a Greek flag, touched
down in the country's capital on Monday (May 23) to
resounding cheers as crowds gathered at the airport to get
a glimpse at the new Eurovision champion.
The singer was handed bouquets of flowers as people
rushed to take a picture with her and get an autograph.
'It hasn't sunk in yet, that Greece is number
one..Music is one thing that unites the world regardless of
language... I am very touched.' said Paparizou before
choking up with tears.
The singer later performed the winning song at a live
outdoor concert attended by thousands of shouting fans at
the country's national TV network ERT, Eurovision member
and organizer of Greece's participation.
Paparizou held up a Greek flag during the concert
drawing cheers from the crowd.
'Number 1' mania has hit Greece since Paparizou's win
on Saturday with her upbeat song 'My Number 1'. T-shirts
and hats have been printed and are selling across the
country. Newstations continuously re-broadcast the win
while radio stations played the song repeatedly.
Fans took to the streets on Saturday waving Greek flags
when news broke that Greece beat out 23 other countries in
the song competition.
It mimicked the scene on the streets of the country in
2004, when Greece won the European football championships.
It was Paparizou's second participation at the
Eurovision contest, in 2001 she finished third with her
then band, Antique, and the song, 'Die for You'.
Greece also came third in last year's competition when
it sent one of its hottest pop stars, Sakis Rouvas, to the
competition.
This year's win is the country's first since it began
its participation in 1974.
The Greek singer scored 230 points in telephone voting
from viewers in 39 countries, far ahead of second place
Malta with 39 points.
Malta's Chiara, who sang "Angel," was perhaps the most
traditional of all the performances with a minimum of
glitter.
Romania's Luminita Anghel and her group Sistem,
singing "Let me Try" with a variety of steel drums on
stage, was third.
