- Story Text: Couples in the Philippines capital have broken the
world record of gathering the most number of kissers in a
mass smooching session on Valentine's Day.
More than five thousand couples showed up along
Manila's bayside boulevard to beat Chile's record of 4,445
pairs of kissers and to mark Valentine' Day (February 14).
Manila Mayor Lito Atienza, who organised the event,
also kissed his wife on stage to boost the attempt to beat
the existing world record.
"Along Roxas Boulevard, the bay area as we call it, is
where this event is being held which aims to break or set a
new world record of people expressing their affection and
love for each other", the mayor said.
The couples smooched simultaneously for 10 seconds
along the city's bay, thus beating the record set by
couples in Santiago last month.
One of the kissers, Menchu Cueto said the event is a
welcome relief from the hard times Filipinos are suffering
because of political bickering with the upcoming elections
in May and economic difficulties.
"It's a good feeling that we're part of something this
big for the Philippines. Our country is going through some
hard times, but at least there's still happy events like
this happening."
Men and women, most of them in their 20s, poured onto a
cordoned-off street in Chile's capital in January to kiss
for at least 10 seconds and smash the previous record held
by Canada.
