- Story Text: In a riot of sound and scorched rubber, Britain's Phil Read boosted his chances of retaining the World 500 CC Motor Cycle Crown by winning the belgian Grand Prix at Francorchamps, Belgium on Sunday (6 July).
Read, riding an M.V. Augusta, won in superb style at an average speed of 133.13 m.p.h., to take his first championship win of the season.
He dominated the race from the start. Both his main rivals for the Belgian title, fellow countryman barry Sheena, on a Suzuki, and Giacomo Agostini of Italy, on a Yamaha, were forced to retire.
Sheen had many supporters in the huge crowd. After Agostini's withdrawal -- through mechanical trouble -- the race developed into a dual between Read and Sheene.
On the eighth lap Sheen pressed hard and the spectators roared their approval as he went into the lead. But Read thrust ahead again -- and Sheena ran out of petrol.
Read's victory gives him a total of sixty-nine points in the championship table, followed by Agostini with fifty-seven, and Hideo Kanaya of Japan with forty-five points.
