- Story Text: Despite repeated attacks from communist river bank positions and a direct hit on a barge, a river convoy bringing supplies to the khmer capital of Phnom Penh arrived in the city on Thursday (January 23). The convoy came under attack from the start of its voyage up the Mekong River from the South Vietnamese border.
The communists kept up their attack even while the convoy was berthing at Phnom Penh.....showing just how close they are to the capital.
The convoy was the first to reach the beleaguered capital since the latest communist offensive began on New Year's Day.
Khmer Government aircraft tried to give cover, but an almost continuous fire still rained on the three tugboats towing the barges of supplies.
Phnom Penh is low on food and ammunition. It has been relying on airlifted supplies to hold out. But even as the convoy was making its way slowly up the mekong, the communists lobbed about 20 shells on and around the airport forcing flights to be turned back.
