- Story Text: Leaders of fishermen blockading Dutch ports to demand
compensation for a cod fishing ban said on Thursday (March 1)
they hoped to end the protest in the evening after a
government pledge to submit proposals.
More than 100 vessels were blocking the entrances to
Rotterdam -- the world's biggest port -- and Amsterdam
harbours, officials said.
The fishermen are angry at loss of earnings because of the
European Union and Norway's decision to impose a ten-week ban
on cod fishing from February 14 in a large area of the North
Sea in an emergency move to stave off extinction of the fish
there.
Fisherman Eric Brunkman said about 40 vessels were on
blockade at the point where he was stationed near Hook of
Holland.
He said the fishermen would not end their blockade before
they had received compensation and the opening up of fishing
grounds closed to them at the present time.
