We have hundreds of tombs covered with sand. All these tombs were discovered in the last century and the sand covered these tombs. Also the tombs were never recorded by anyone and therefore we are doing a major important clearance and re-excavations around the tombs. We are cleaning the tombs away. The tombs now can be clear and shown if you are standing in front of the great pyramids of Khufu and we are also giving more restoration to the rocks that are falling down, we are putting them back. We are also giving a number to each tomb, so if you are reading a book and you know the number of the tomb you will see this number already in the tomb itself, and that's what we call it site management." 2.15 12. - Story Text: Hundreds of Egyptian tombs, discovered in the last
century, are being cleaned up and restored after being left
covered with sand for years.
Hundreds of tombs, discovered last century, have
finally been given a spring clean and cleared of sand
accumulated over the years.
A government spokesman in charge of the preservation of
Egyptian antiquities, Dr Zahir Hawass, said major conservation
work was taking place at the Giza plateau, west of the great
pyramid of Khufu (Cheops).
Hundreds of tombs, which were discovered last century,
were left undocumented, and covered with sand.
But, the tombs are now in the process of being cleaned
and numbered and restored. Dr Hawass, who is under-secretary
of state for the Giza monuments and director of the pyramids,
said that the tombs were so deep underground that cars had
been driving over them in recent times.
The importance of these tombs has only recently been
realised.
The biggest tomb, the tomb of Lymery, so far is the only
burial site opened to the public after months of clearing.
Inside the tomb there were drawings revealing
information about the lives of the ancient pharaohs.
Since the tombs are still under the process of being
cleared and studied, the information contained in these
drawings is in the process of being collated and documented.
But, once all the tombs are uncovered, they will be
numbered and recorded in a book that will be published to help
all visitors identify the tombs easily and learn the secrets
of each tomb.
