- Story Text: Indonesian prosecutors have submitted documents to
courts as part of their corruption case against disgraced
former President Suharto. The move is one of several
attempting to bring the one-time autocrat to trial.
Prosecutors handed over two boxes filled with
documents to the South Jakarta Court on Tuesday (August 8).
It is now up to the court to decide when the trial
should begin and whether Suharto is fit enough to face the
courtroom.
The Attorney-General's office last week formally charged
Suharto with graft over the misuse of up to 550 million U.S.
dollars from seven charities he controlled while in power.
Suharto suffered a stroke last year and was also
hospitalised for another ailment. His lawyers say he is too
sickly to stand trial, but on Monday (August 7)
Attorney-General Marzuki Darusman said he was healthy enough
to stand trial.
"We have the latest medical report which says that
there's no basic change in his condition," Darusman told
reporters.
About 200 demonstrators carrying banners and chanting
slogans gathered on Tuesday (August 8), calling for Suharto to
be brought to trial.
Suharto and his family have been accused of corruptly
amassing a fortune of up to 45 billion U.S. dollars during his
presidency, prompting some critics to call the current charges
inadequate. #
