- Story Text: The first aid to flood stricken Mozambique from
Portugal has arrived in Beira. In addition to regular
supplies, the team has brought in medical equipment required
to set up a mobile hospital which they aim to have up and
running in 48 hours.
Meanwhile, South African ambassador to Mozambique, Jessie
Duarte, and other South African defense officials have met to
discuss their modus operandi in supplying aid to Mozambique.
The Portuguese team and their accompanying cargo
touched down in Beira on Sunday (March 4).
Soon the cargo was offloaded from the aircraft and
transported along the tarmac where it would be assembled.
Arthur Gomes, Vice President of the Portuguese fire brigade
said, "We are here to supply to the people of Mozambique any
help that they need."
"We're bringing medical supplies, rubber boats and other
equipment we'll need to set up a mobile hospital and we'd like
to be up and running within 48 hours," he added.
A South African team of defence officials and South
African ambassador to Mozambique, Jessie Duarte, also arrived
in Beira in a light aircraft on Sunday to attend a briefing on
aid to flood stricken areas in Mozambique.
Duarte expressed regret for not being able react to the
situation as quickly as she would have liked. "We are sorry we
were late in coming but the decision first had to be approved
by parliament and that's why it took so long but we're here
now," she said.
Zimbabwean authorities said on Sunday that at least 10
people had died after floods hit the country and urged people
living near rivers to move to higher ground.
The Civil Protection Unit said the floods, which also have
hit Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique, could get worse.
