- Story Text: Silvio Berlusconi has taken the oath of office as prime
minister of Italy's 59th government since 1945 and prepared
for his first foray on the international stage at NATO
and European Union summits this week.
Berlusconi, who won last month's general election at
the head of a centre-right coalition, took the oath of office
on Monday (June 11) before President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi
during a ceremony at the Quirinale presidential palace.
His ministers include right-wing National Alliance leader
Gianfranco Fini who becomes Deputy Prime Minister and Northern
League leader Umberto Bossi, who has caused some disquiet over
his criticism of the EU and immigration, becomes devolution
minister.
Renato Ruggiero, ex-head of the World Trade Organisation,
becomes foreign minister and Giulio Tremonti takes the post of
minister of the economy which combines the former finance and
treasury ministries.
Despite failing to win any seats in the lower house Chamber
of Deputies, Bossi's Northern League were given an additional
two ministries -- justice and employment.
The League did win 17 seats in the Senate and Berlusconi
will have to depend on them to ensure a majority in the upper
house.
The unpredictable League led by the outspoken Bossi could
become the fault line in the Berlusconi government and
threaten a repeat performance of 1994 when it toppled the
billionaire businessman's first administration after seven
months.
Berlusconi's government next week faces votes of
confidence in both houses of parliament, which should be
little more than a formality as his coalition won outright
majorities in both chambers.
