- Story Text: Georgian President backs Ukrainian opposition leader Yushchenko.
Ukraine's opposition leader Viktor Yushchenko on Tuesday (November 23) received support from a man who's been in the same position he finds himself in just now...and triumphed.
A year ago exactly on Tuesday Georgia staged what became known as the "rose revolution" which toppled veteran leader Eduard Shevardnadze.
The man who succeeded him, pro-westener Mikhail Saakashvili, marked the first anniversary of the mass revolt by opening a newly-built Holy Trinity Cathedral in Tbilisi.
And he took the opportunity to address the Ukrainian people.
Saakashvili wished them success and victory in their fight to have Yushchenko installed as the new President instead of Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovich.
But it was uncertain if Ukraine's liberals could force similar changes as Georgia achieved last year.
There were dramatic scenes in the Georgian parliament when Saakashvili and his supporters stormed the chamber, calling on Shevardnadze to resign. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
