- Story Text: United Nations (U.N.) special envoy Yasushi Akashi said on Friday (May 5) he had been assured by Croatian officials that Serb prisoners and civilians were being properly treated.
He was speaking after touring the town of Pakrac - to which he was denied access yesterday - where hundreds of Serbs were reported to have been rounded up when Croatian soldiers captured the rebel Serb pocket of western Slavonia.
At least 600 Serb men of fighting age were taken from Pakrac to nearby towns including Bjelovar.
A European Union monitor has said the men were treated correctly as prisoners of war and Croatian officials allowed cameras to see the men being processed in a Bjelovar gymnasium.
The International Red Cross has also said that 1,500 women and children still in Pakrac were in satisfactory conditions. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
