- Story Text: Haitians continue to suffer as aid agencies struggle to distribute supplies amidst growing gang violence and looting.
Haitian victims of Tropical Storm Jeanne are finally beginning to receive much needed food and water Wednesday (September 29) as aid distribution centers begin to get the steady supply of food that they need to distribute to the thousands of desperate families.
Carol Bellamy, the Director of the United Nations Children Fund, UNICEF, met with aid distributors and toured shelters filled with women and children whose homes were swept away in the floods.
The estimated toll from the floods triggered by Tropical Storm Jeanne climbed to about 2,400 after a parish priest reported "a total disaster" in small towns in Poteau, a region outside Gonaives.
United Nations peacekeeping troops are desperately attempting to distribute aid to over 20,000 people in Gonaives, Haiti's third-largest city.
Torrential rain from Jeanne engulfed much of the port city of 200,000 people last week. The storm was blamed for at least 36 deaths in the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and Florida.
Haiti is prone to deadly floods because 98 percent of its forests have been chopped down, largely to make charcoal for cooking. In May, about 2,000 people died in widespread mudslides on the Haitian-Dominican border. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
