  • Story Text: Turkish authorities have completed the formalities for the release of 17-year-old Timothy Davey. All that remains is the publication of the amnesty in the Official Gazette, and that could happen any day.

    Timothy at present is being held at the Sirinyer Reformatory in Izmir. He has been in various Turkish jails for the last 33-months. Timothy was sentenced to six years imprisonment and fined GBP 6000 (15,000 U.S. dollars) for conspiring to sell about 60 pounds (37 kgs) of hashish. He - with his mother and five younger brothers and sisters - was on his way home to Britain from India when the offence occurred.

    Since Timothy's arrest, Mrs. Davey and the rest of the family have lived in Turkey, working for his release. At present, they are living in a rented flat not far from the reformatory. Mrs. Davey has said she has no plans to return to Britain after Timothy's release She'll take the family either to Holland or Australia.

    The amnesty, declared by President Bulent Ecevit and involving a total of 4000 prisoners, has caused a political crisis in Turkey. Some members of the junior party in the President's coalition Government at first refused to back the amnesty, but later there was a surprise change of heart. Nevertheless, President Ecevit may decide to resign - rather than risk future defections in the coalition. He is expected to announce his decision this weekend.
