  • Story Text: Chinese across the world are getting ready for the Year of the Rabbit, which starts this year on February 3.
    In Taipei, capital of Taiwan, worshippers have filled temples, praying for good health, success and love in the year ahead while others look for answers in the pattern of special chips thrown on the ground.
    For those born in the Year of the Rabbit, it's an especially important year.
    Rabbits such as actor Zac Efron, actress Eva Longoria, and singer Fergie don't need to wish for fame or money, but according to a famous Taiwanese fortune teller, the year ahead won't necessarily be an easy year for everyone.
    A-list Hollywood couple Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, both of whom are Rabbits, born in 1963 and 1975 respectively, may be taking a risk if they choose the coming year to tie the knot, says fortune teller-presenter Chen Wei-chung.
    "Angelina Jolie, who was born in the Year of the Rabbit, has two guardian gods, which means one will make sure that her career will flow like a fish in water, and she will make a great fortune. The other god will take care of her relationship. She is very stable in her relationship and won't be too influenced by it, she will be very relaxed about it. But the one who will feel pressure and discomfort, who is likely to will feel hurt and want to escape, will be her partner, Brad Pitt," he said.
    One man who is going to have a good year professionally is Johnny Depp, but the superstar actor won't be nearly as successful in the love department, Chen explained.
    "Because of the month in which he was born, he also has two guardian gods, that means that he will do consistently well at the box office, and he will be in one movie after another and will make plenty of money. Most importantly, his luckily star will be shining on his sign of the zodiac, so I think for this year, he can build both his fortune and his reputation. But because the earthly branch of his birth year is 'Kui', his love life will be easily plagued by scandal and rumour," said Chen.
    There are twelve signs of the Chinese Zodiac, all animals which move in a twelve year cycle, meaning that those born in 1951, 1963, 1975, 1987 and 1999 are all rabbits.
    More complicated than western style horoscopes, a whole host of factors, such as the time within the year in which a person was born, are factored into making a prediction.
    This year is a 'Metal Rabbit' year, where metal is the dominant element. Some say this can either represent a small decorative object, such as jewellery, which might bode well for marriage, or a dagger, which could represent murder.
    Chen predicts it will be a good year for Kate Winslet, born 1975, who will be raking in the cash and will find it easy to get pregnant, should she wish to.
    Drew Barrymore, also born 1975, who must take care not to be tricked by jealous people, but would also have an easy time conceiving, says Chen.
    Singer Whitney Houston, born 1963, is going to have a difficult year of hard work with little gain, says Chen, and must learn from the wisdom of others.
    Footballer David Beckham, born 1975, is in for an uneventful year, but must watch out for marital friction in the Year of the Dragon which follows, Chen warned.
    On the streets of Taipei, far from the glamour of Hollywood, citizens were more concerned about their own fate in the coming year.
    "For China the Year of the Rabbit is a peach blossom year, a year in which people will have good personal relations. In the last few years a lot of things have been caused by bad personal relationships, so we think that a New Year brings new hope, and I think that's very good," said 49-year-old Yu Shu-Chen, a Tiger.
    "In the New Year I hope I can decide my dissertation topic early, and I hope that my family's business can be better, and I hope there won't be any more extreme weather, because dramatic changes in the world climate have made people suffer," said 20-year-old student Wang Chi-ching.
    The Chinese New Year, or Spring Festival, is the most important holiday in the Chinese calendar, when families get together, eat huge meals, give presents of money in red envelopes and set off fireworks to welcome the New Year with a 'bang'.
