Summary:The monastery at Monte Cassino, Italy, became a legend during the 1944 Italian campaign. For weeks, the successful Allied advance against fierce German resistance had been bogged down at the foot of the hill on which the monastery sat. Possession by German troops gave them complete command of the plains below until May 18 1944.
