Summary:Erwin Rommel was the most famous German General of World War II. From obscurity, he was given command of an army during the invasion of France and proved a brilliant tactician. He achieved fame as commander of Axis forces in North Africa and was feted by Nazi leaders and promoted to Field Marshal by Hitler himself. Even after defeat in Africa, Rommel was regarded as Germany's most able soldier. He was put in charge of defences along the coast of Europe, where it was expected the Allies would attempt a landing. He made the last of many inspections of the so-called Atlantic Wall on May 22 1944. But five months later Rommel was dead. He killed himself after being involved in the plot to kill Hitler.
