- Story Text: Goldie Hawn rode to London's most famous department store on Wednesday (January 8) - on an elephant. The star of "First Wives Club" was not out shopping, but opening the renowned Harrods sale.
And although Hawn's love of elephants is well documented, on this occasion her steed was made of fibreglass.
The Harrods sale is a London tradition enjoyed by locals and tourists alike, some of whom queue in sub-zero temperatures for hours to make sure they snare a bargain. They were cheered by a Dixieland jazz band as they waited for the doors to open, sipping hot punch provided, as tradition dictates, by the store.
Hawn was a big hit with the women in the queue, most of whom were impressed by her seemingly eternal youth, despite having passed her 50th birthday.
Hawn was met by the owner of Harrod's, Mohamed al Fayed, and together they led the countdown to opening time (9.00 am /0900 GMT). In view of the crowds, they decided to let shoppers in four minutes early and then took off on a tour of their own, flanked by an entourage of Scottish pipers.
Hawn, star of a string of hit films including the recently-released First Wives' Club star, received a 15,000 pound sterling (25,000 U.S.-dollars) donation for the Fauna and Flora International Asian Elephant appeal from Al Fayed.
At a news conference she spoke of her love of elephants. She has made a television film about them, and said she was delighted to do something that allowed her to help them. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
