- Story Text: Pop queens "The Spice Girls" have been tipped to sweep the board at this year's Brit Awards.
The sizzling girl band was nominated in four categories at Monday's (January 13) nomination ceremony in London's Hard Rock Cafe.
The categories are -- Best British Group, Best British Newcomer, their No.1 single "Wannabe" nominated for Best British Single and "Wannabe" and "Say You'll Be There" both contenders for Best Video by a British Artist.
But the fresh newcomers will be sharing the limelight with a past British success, The Bee Gees.
The Bee Gees, whose major hits included the soundtrack to Saturday Night Fever, will be receiving the award for Outstanding Contribution to British Music.
The Brit Awards achieved notoriety last year when Pulp's Jarvis Cocker staged a protest against Michael Jackson.
Despite that disruption, Cocker will be invited to perform at this year's awards.
Bad boys Oasis and their rivals Blur were not considered contenders in most categories as they did not produce an album in time for the award nominations.
Oasis scored only one nomination -- for "Don't Look Back in Anger" in the Best British Single category.
One of the most coveted of the 14 categories is Best British Newcomer.
Contenders Baby Birds were at the nominations to perform their smash hit "You're Gorgeous".
But the group said they thought they'd been invited to entertain other nominees and had not known they had been tipped for one of the top awards.
Another newcomer, Alisha's Attic, also was at the nominations.
They said they were thrilled to be nominated in the same category as some of their heroes.

Six hundred people make up the voting academy for the 1997 Brit Awards, comprising record retailers, journalists, television and radio presenters, producers, record companies, publishers, managers and promoters. Commercial radio listeners are taking part for the first time -- voting in the Best British Single category. Viewers of cable channel The Box can vote for Best British Video, while BBC Radio One listners can have their say in the Best British Newcomer.
This year's awards will be hosted by comedian Ben Elton.
Organisers hope teen idol Peter Andre will play, even though he failed to receive a single award nomination.
