- Story Text: With a gentle rasp of Lambretta throttles, the Mods reinvaded Brighton as the cult film Quadrophenia returned to its roots with a gala revival premiere in the seaside resort.
It is 30 years since Brighton witnessed the Bank Holiday clashes of Mods and Rockers on the seafront but last night the violence was kept firmly on celluloid.
Director Franc Roddam and several leading stars of the re-released 18-year-old film joined hundreds of veteran and latter-day Mods at the Odeon cinema premiere.
Trip Hop music maestro Goldie was also at the premiere who was just 11 years old when he first saw the film after it was released in 1979.
He joined 400 people on a special train from London Victoria to Brighton.
"After seeing the film I went out and bought a parka. I think Camden Market is going to sell a few parkas after this film. There is going to be a renaissance of Mod," he said.
The revival of Quadrophenia was signalled by a fleet of 50 scooters, complete with an array of gleaming chrome headlights and mirrors, wending their way through the Sussex resort and roaring up through the waiting crowds to the cinema doors.
Quadrophenia was the film that launched Sting's acting career.
He too was unable to attend because he is appearing in concert in Germany.
Phil Daniels, who played Chalky in the film, and went on to direct the cult movie ID, admitted before the premiere that he had reservations about seeing it again.
"I am not looking forward to seeing myself after 18 years, but I can take it" he said.
"I remember the scene when I crashed my scooter because I liked that bit." Director Roddam, who was later to bring Masterchef to TV, said: "I have only seen the film once after I made it. It is a big screen movie - a working class epic. It is an energetic and uncynical film and I'll be delighted if it becomes the cult movie of 1997." The film, set in Brighton, revolves around the rivalry between two groups of young people in the sixties and follows the antics of charismatic Mod leader Ace Face, played by Sting.
A spokesperson for the film's distribution company said it has been re-released now because "Trainspotting talked to the youth audience of 1996 and Quadrophenia is for the youth audience of 1997. It's the ultimate teen angst film." Quadrophenia is due in cinemas from January 31. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
