- Story Text: Hundreds of fans packed London's Leicester Square on Wednesday (January 29) to see Hugh Grant and his girlfriend Liz Hurley arrive for the UK premiere of their latest film "Extreme Measures." The medical thriller, starring Grant and Gene Hackman, marks Hurley's first outing as a producer.
Grant plays Doctor Guy Luthan, a medic working in one of New York City's busiest hospital trauma rooms.
When a homeless man wearing a wristband from another hospital dies in suspicious circumstances, Luthan begins investigating.
Eventually he uncovers an illegal research programme, using live human subjects in experiments to find a cure for spinal injuries.
The programme is being run by one of the country's leading medical figures, Dr. Lawrence Myrick, played by Hackman.
The film co-stars Sarah Jessica Parker as Jodie Trammel, a nurse in Luthan's emergency room.
"Extreme Measures" is the first film to come from Simian Films, a production company Grant and Hurley set up last year.
The pair made news in 1995, when Grant was arrested in Hollywood after being caught in a car with prostitute Divine Brown.
Despite massive publicity surrounding the incident, Hurley stood by her boyfriend.
Hurley says she was drawn to the "Extreme Measures" script by the moral dilemmas involved in medical research.
The film was directed by Michael Apted, whose previous credits include "Nell" with Jodie Foster and "Gorillas in the Mist" with Sigourney Weaver.
Before production began, Apted insisted both cast and crew spent time in real hospital emergency rooms to lend authenticity to the film.
"Extreme Measures" opens throughout the UK on January 31. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
