Summary:September 17, 1944 - the start of one of the most desperate gambles of World War II. As British and Canadian armies pressed the Germans back across northern Europe, airborne troops were dropped behind the front line in an effort to capture the vital Rhine bridge at Arnhem in Holland. It was a heroic but unsuccessful effort - nearly all the British and Polish troops employed on the operation were either killed or captured.
