Summary:On December 16, 1944, Adolf Hitler himself signaled the launching of the last-ditch counter offensive in the Ardennes Forest of Belgium. German strategy was to take advantage of thinness in the allied front in the Ardennes. Hitler's prime aim was to break through this thinly manned sector and recapture the key Belgian port of Antwerp. The net effect of the 'Battle of the Bulge' was a six-week delay in the Allied advance and a loss of German manpower and equipment that virtually ended all resistance in the West.
