- Story Text: Portugal has cooked its way into the Guinness Book of Records by seating 15,000 people at the longest dinner table ever laid to celebrate the opening of Europe's longest bridge.
Five kms (three miles) is the total length of the world's longest table installed on Vasco da Gama, a feat which will enter into the Guiness Book of Records.
The Portuguese table, will dethrone the previous world record, exceeeding it by more tham two kms, and to prove that it is indeed a world record, the event was certified by a local independent body recognised by the Guiness Book.
Cooks prepared over two weeks eight tonnes of "feijoada", a heavy southern Portuguese stew using 1,350 kilos of white beans, 480 kilos of onions, 1,190 kilos of pork, 400 kilos of lard and many other ingredients.
The 18-km (11 mile) bridge across the River Tagus opens two months before the launch of Expo'98, the Lisbon world fair which marks the 500th anniversary of navigator Vasco da Gama's discovery of the sea route to India. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
