- Story Text: As Hollywood readied itself for the Oscars, the first of a number of official parties for the "golden boy" nominees was held on Tuesday (March 11).
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences honoured those nominated for Academy Awards at a special lunch in Beverly Hills.
Leading actor nominees Brenda Blethyn ("Secrets and Lies"), Frances McDormand ("Fargo"), Billy Bob Thornton ("Sling Blade") and Kristin Scott Thomas ("The English Patient") attended the party.
"I feel like a child of six and I'm over the moon," said Thomas of her best actress nomination for the role of Katherine Clifton in "The English Patient." Representing the supporting actor categories were Cuba Gooding Jr. ("Jerry Maguire"), Barbara Hershey ("The Portrait of a Lady"), Armin Mueller-Stahl ("Shine"), Edward Norton ("Primal Fear") and James Woods ("Ghosts of Mississippi").
Cuba Gooding Jr. joked with reporters that now that he has beennominated for an Oscar, people ask him how to pronounce his name, rather than just pronounce it incorrectly.
Scott Hicks ("Shine"), Mike Leigh ("Secrets and Lies") and Anthony Minghella ("The English Patient") have all been nominated for Best Director.
Minghella described "The English Patient's" best picture nomination as a revelation in that audiences prefer a film for "grown ups".
The 69th Annual Academy Awards will be broadcast live from the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, California on Monday, March 24.
The stars were still on the honours trail on Tuesday evening at the Blockbuster Entertainment Awards ceremony.
Awards were handed out in the traditional categories, recognising Cuba Gooding Jr. as "Favourite Supporting Actor in a Comedy or Romance" for his work in "Jerry Maguire", Sandra Bullock for "Favourite Actress in a Suspense Thriller" in "A Time To Kill" and John Travolta as "Favourite Actor in a Drama" for "Phenomenon." Other winners included Goldie Hawn for "Favourite Actress in a Comedy ("First Wives Club"), Helen Hunt for "Favourite Actress in an Action-Adventure" ("Twister").
For the third annual presentation of these awards more than 11 million votes were cast in over 30 categories. This distinction makes them the largest publicly voted awards presentation in history. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
