Story Text: U.S. President Barack Obama on Thursday (March 27) afternoon met with new Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi at Rome's hilltop congress venue Villa Madama.
Obama, on a day-long visit to the Italian capital, earlier held talks with Pope Francis and attended a working lunch with Italian President Giorgio Napolitano and delegations from the U.S. and Italy.
Renzi and Obama are due to a hold a joint news conference following the meeting.
The on-going political debate over Russia and President Vladimir Putin is expected to be among the main topics of the meeting between Renzi and Obama.
Ahead of Obama's visit placards had been placed along Rome's major roads reading: "Obama an unwelcome guest. Rome is with Putin." The placards were paid for by a right-wing group.
Later in the afternoon the U.S. President was expected to make a private tour of the Colosseum, which will be closed to the public and tightly sealed off by security staff.
Obama will leave Italy on Friday (March 28) morning and travel to Saudia Arabia.
