- Story Text: "Jesus Christ Superstar" premiered in New York City with Andrew Lloyd Webber on hand to witness the ressurection of a musical he wrote almost 30 years ago.
For the first time since 1971, Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Jesus Christ Superstar" returned to Broadway opening at the Ford Center for Performing Arts.
Andrew Lloyd Webber was on hand for the New York premiere admitting that he had barely seen this new take on his nearly 30 year old musical, "Well we're very, very pleased.Well I've only seen it once and I've had nothing to do with it, but I think it's fabulous."
The cast features Glenn Carter as Jesus and Tony Vincent as Judas.Carter's performance is highlighted by his striking high notes while Tony Vincent's upbeat and spririted portrayl of Judas brought the audience to it's feet.
The show's director, Gale Edwards spoke frankly about her love of the musical, "I think it's a great masterpiece.I think the music is fantastic. It's a great score and probbably the greatest story ever told story of amazing people going through extraoridinary circumstances, so we tried to bring that to life rather than just sing the songs."
Edwards and Andrew Lloyd Webber joined the cast on stage for their curtain calls. While the audience cheered on the cast and the show's creators, Maya Davis who plays Mary in the show was moved to tears.
The original London production of "Jesus Christ Superstar" opened in 1972.By the time it closed after 8 years and 3,358 performances it had become the longest running mucical in West End history. It was eventually surpassed by three other Andrew Lloyd Webber musicals, "Cats", "Starlight Express" and "The Phantom of the Opera." The original "Jesus Christ Superstar" launched the careers of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
