- Story Text: French survivors and relatives of the dead laid wreaths and lit candles at a tsunami Wall of Remembrance in southern Thailand on Sunday (December 25), the eve of the disaster's first anniversary.
About 50 people gathered at the memorial on the Thai tourist island of Phuket to honour the 95 French nationals who died in the Asian tsunami which left more than 230,000 people dead or missing in 13 Indian Ocean nations on December 26 last year.
Some of the French casualties occurred north of Phuket on the beaches of Khao Lak, where many luxury hotels were badly damaged, included the Sofitel Khao Lak.
Thai authorities say at least 10,000 people, including up to 2,000 foreigners, are expected to attend memorials to be held in the six southern provinces affected by the tsunami, which killed more than 2,092 foreign tourists.
Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra had earlier announced plans to pay for the flights and accommodation of survivors and the immediate family of victims from December 25 to December 27. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
