Summary:On May 7 1945 the commanders of the German armies in northern Europe arrive at Allied headquarters to effect the unconditional surrender of their forces. This sparse ceremony effectively ended World War II in Europe. Footnote: Although the surrender document was signed on 4 May 1945 it did not actually take affect until May 7 1945 to allow time for German troops to surrender to the Western Allies rather than the Red Army.
