- Story Text: Brazilian actor and director, Jose Wilker, died on Saturday (April 5).
He was 66-years-old.
The hugely popular film, television and stage actor suffered a heart attack and died in Rio de Janeiro Saturday morning.
Wilker was known for his work as both an actor and director in some of Brazil's most popular novelas, soap opera style television shows that garner huge audiences in Brazil's primetime television.
Wilker also worked on more than 40 feature films and was an icon on the Brazilian screen both large and small.
Some of his best known works were the "Roque Santeiro" "Senhora do Destino" novelas.
He also starred in the films, "Bye bye Brasil" and "Dona Flor e Seus Dois Maridos" (Dona Flor and her Two Husbands), adapted from the 1966 novel by Jorge Amado.
Brazilian actor Juca de Oliveira said Wilker's death was a big loss for the Brazilian art world.
"It is a big loss, an enormous loss, because we've lost, in my view, one of the most gifted artists this country has. I'd say of all time, because to accumulate so much talent and so much ability in so many different things - it really is an irreplaceable loss," de Oliveira said.
Wilker is survived by his two daughters and countless admirers of his work as an actor and director. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
