- Story Text: The new President of Bolivia, Victor Paz Estenssoro, made his first public appearance since taking office when he reviewed the armed forces on August 7. He was accompanied by the Chief of Staff, Simon Cejas Tordoya, who stood beside him as he read a message to the troops. Several thousand representatives of each branch of the armed forces them marched pas the reviewing stand. the Bolivian military, which has staged five coups in the past eight years, has pledged to uphold Paz's presidency. The new leader's greatest difficulties look set to come from the powerful Bolivian Labour Confederation (COB), which may oppose the stern austerity measures thought to be necessary to right the disastrous state of the economy. The new president of the Bolivian Senate has warned that inflation could reach 50,000 per cent this year and Paz was said to be preparing an emergency package to meet that contingency.
