- Story Text: Three-time Oscar nominee Morgan Freeman returns to familiar territory in his latest thriller "Kiss the Girls," co-starring Ashley Judd.
Freeman plays Dr. Alex Cross, a brilliant Washington, D.C.
police detective and forensic psychologist who learns that his niece has disappeared from college in North Carolina, an apparent kidnapping victim.
Cross is aided in his pursuit by Kate Mctiernan (Ashley Judd), a strong-willed and determined young doctor who is the only woman to have escaped from a demented psychopath who goes by the name of "Casanova." She joins him in the hunt, and together they race against time to find Cross' niece and the chilling truth behind her disappearance.
"Kiss the Girls" is directed by Gary Fleder, whose previous film "Things To Do in Denver When You're Dead," garnered critical praise on the independent film circuit.
Fleder believes the focus of the film differs from that of other films of the same genre ie "Silence of the Lambs" and "Seven", by telling the story from the point of the "good guys".
"I decided that I wanted to abstract the bad guy and almost never see him and make him the woods, the environment...and make it in a way more formidable", he said.
The film had its world premiere in Los Angeles on September 30 and opened in American theaters on Friday, October 3. It jumped to the top of the U.S. box office in its first weekend of release earning more than 13 million dollars.
Freeman is best known for his roles in "Seven," "The Shawshank Redemption," "Driving Miss Daisy," "Glory," and Clint Eastwood's "Unforgiven." He dismissed the notion that his character in "Kiss The Girls" was similar to that in "Seven" though acknowledged it was always a concern.
"Until you read the script and find the character, if the character carries too many similarities, then you gotta stop and weigh it really carefully", he said.
Freeman was nominated for Best Actor for his performances in "Driving Miss Daisy" and "The Shawshank Redemption" and for Best Supporting Actor for his role in "Street Smart." Ashley Judd, part of the same family as the country music duo Wynonna and Naomi Judd, recently starred opposite Matthew McConaughey in the drama "A Time To Kill." She received critical acclaim for her feature film debut in the independent hit "Ruby in Paradise" and played opposite Al Pacino and Robert DeNiro in the crime saga "Heat." - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
