- Story Text: Horror films were said to have lost their appeal at the end of the eighties but the huge financial success of director, Wes Craven's film "Scream" soon altered that trend.
The hit low-budget movie reaffirmed the popularity of the 'blood 'n' guts' genre and encouraged the director to produce a follow-up in record time.
Filming of "Scream 2" began in June 1997 only six months after the original opened.
Craven admits his mission was difficult.
"The goal was to make a sequel worthy of, equal to, and if possible, better than the first," he said.
The sequel opened in the United States in December 1997 and topped the box office, making 33 million US dollars in the first three days.It became the biggest December opening film of all time.
"Scream 2" held its British premiere on Saturday April 3 with Courteney Cox's side-kick from the hit U.S.sitcom "Friends", Jennifer Aniston throwing her support behind the film.
Speaking at the UK premiere Craven said he thought the film was a fun picture.
"It's intriguing, it's kind of a murder mystery, it's about young people in a different way.It kind of cites all the other horror films but is new," he said.
The film was written by Kevin Williamson who said he set out to make it a continuation and an escalation of "Scream".
It reunites the "Scream" survivors at Windsor College, a small mid-western university in Woodsboro as well as introducing new additions to the cast.
The story begins, two years after the first murders in Woodsboro, California.Sidney Prescott's (Neve Campbell) freshman year is coming to an end.
Sid has a great roommate, Hallie (Elise Neal) and a devoted boyfriend, Derek (Jerry O'Connell). She has also landed the lead in the school play.
Smart-mouthed Randy (Jamie Kennedy), Sid's old pal who also survived the Woodsboro killers, is enrolled in Windsor's film school and he's coping with life post-murders, just like Sid.
Terror strikes the town again when someone on the campus is killed when a film called "Stab" opens around the country.
"Stab" based on the best selling book by tabloid tease Gale Weathers (Cox), depicts the real life account of the Woodsboro killings.
The book not only topped the charts but helped free Cotton Weary (Liev Schreiber), the man Sidney accused of killing her mother. The movie's release has unleashed a new killer at Windsor.
The new murders naturally draw a swarm of reporters to the campus and plunge poor Sidney into a state of deja-vu.
Journalist Weathers storms into town acting as if she owns the story and is accompanied by a terrified new cameraman (Duane Martin).
David Arquette, who played Woodsboro deputy Dewey Riley is also back though very much worse-for-wear.
His sister was murdered in the first Woodsboro killings and although he's retired from the force now, he's willing to put his life on the line again, for the safety of Sidney.
Everyone on the campus is anxious. The body count is climbing and everyone's a suspect.
Neve Campbell made her acting debut at the age of 15 in the Toronto premiere of Phantom of the Opera directed by Hal Prince. In 1996 she played a teenage witch in the black comedy "The Craft".She starred with Matt Dillon and Kevin Bacon in "Wild Things" and is currently on the fourth season of the the acclaimed television drama "Party of Five".
Cox is best known for her portrayal of the sweetly neurotic restaurant manager, Monica in the hit TV sitcom "Friends" which is currently in its fourth season.
James Kennedy appeared in William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet and he played the recurring character Tad on the hit series "Ellen".
Elise Neal recently starred in the action-comedy "Money Talks".Her other film credits include "How to Be a Player", "Risky Behaviour", and "Let It Be Me".
Jerry O'Connell is currently featuring in the television series "Sliders".His film credits include "Jerry Maguire", "Calendar Girl" and Rob Reiner's "Stand By Me".
