- Story Text: The day after he witnessed the taping of the final episode of "Seinfeld," the television comedy series he created, Larry David attended the world premiere of his feature film writing and directing debut, "Sour Grapes".
The star of "Seinfeld," Jerry Seinfeld, came along to lend his support -- as did "Sour Grapes" stars Steven Weber and Craig Bierko.
An acquaintance of Jerry Seinfeld since 1976 when the two were performing in comedy clubs, Larry David became a legend in the business as a "comic's comic" -- the one the other comics would come to see.
In 1989, when Seinfeld was asked to develop a show for NBC, he solicited David's advice and the two came up with the idea for the show.
David has won two Writers' Guild Awards for "Seinfeld".
He has also won a Golden Globe Award for producing the show.He received numerous Emmy nominations and won two Emmys: one for Best Comedy Series and one for Best Written Comedy Show.
David left the "Seinfeld" show two years ago to pursue other projects, including "Sour Grapes".
The film is the story of two cousins, played by Weber and Bierko, who blow most of their money on a weekend gambling junket in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
Just as they're about to leave, Bierko's character hits the jackpot with their last two quarters. The problem is, they were Weber's character's quarters.
This sets up a series of comic misadventures as the two men battle each other to determine who gets to keep how much of the money.
Like his scripts for "Seinfeld," Larry David took one incident, the jackpot, in his story for "Sour Grapes" and used it as a springboard for a progression of events.
Unlike the series, however, David did not need to limit himself to 22 minutes per episode and was free to include more adult humour not allowed on prime time television.
Other than Larry David's unique comic world, Weber and Bierko both agree "Sour Grapes" has nothing to do with "Seinfeld." But they also acknowledge the marketing people at Castle Rock Entertainment are enjoying very good fortune to be releasing the film right around the same time "Seinfeld" is coming to a close after nine successful seasons.
The details about the final episode of "Seinfeld" are being kept top-secret, but the cast and crew got together on April 8 to tape most of the final episode.
About 300 invited guests were there to witness the emotional final production. The last five minutes of the episode will be taped in an undisclosed location just a few days before the scheduled May 14 airdate.
Meanwhile, "Sour Grapes" is now playing in select cities in the United States, with more cities getting the film later in the spring. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
