- Story Text: European Parliament President Martin Schulz, who is a center-left's candidate to lead the European Commission, visited flood stricken areas in Croatia on Friday (May 23).
Accompanied by the Croatian Prime Minister Zoran Milanovic, Schulz was briefed by the relief workers about the extent of the damage after the worst flooding for over a century hit the region last week.
The river Sava, which forms the border between Croatia and Bosnia, last week burst its banks flooding towns and cutting power to tens of thousands of homes in the region.
A number of towns and villages were affected, including the village of Gunja which lies on the very border and in which virtually all houses were damaged by flood waters.
"Everybody who sees this, who get the impression of this terrible situation and can only express his compassion and solidarity with the people affected by the floods. As President of the European Parliament we have to think what we can do as European institutions to help. I am grateful to the prime minister (Milanovic) that he showed me the situation," Schulz told reporters in Gunja.
The Party of European Socialists (PES) that brings together the Socialist, Social Democratic and Labour Parties of the European Union said on its webpage that Schulz has altered his election campaign programme to allow for his visit to Croatia and an update on the floods there and in neighbouring countries and explore what additional support is needed. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
