Summary:The first time the atom bomb was used was August 6 1945; the place was Hiroshima, Japan. It was 8.15 in the morning when a single bomber of the U.S. Air Force flew over Hiroshima and dropped the first atom bomb. It exploded at about 2,000 feet above ground level. In the terrifying explosion which followed, 75,000 people were killed or fatally injured, and three quarters of the entire city was destroyed. President Truman called on the Japanese to surrender or suffer a second bomb. This threat was carried out on August 9. The intended target was the city of Kokura but the bomber was unable to find its aiming point and went on to its secondary target Nagasaki. Here, half the city was completely obliterated. The following day, Japan unconditionally surrendered.
