- Story Text: Thai police on Wednesday (June 25) said they have arrested Russian national, Alexander Matusov who is wanted by the Interpol.
"He has commited numerous murders and was involved in over 60 kidnappings, as well as murdering four people in 1996," Advisor to the Royal Thai Police, Police General Wuthi Liptapanlop said.
Thai media said he is also believed to be the leader of a Russian mafia gang known as 'Chelkovo'.
Police said Matusov was arrested on Monday (June 23) at a supermarket in Chonburi province, about 60 kilometres (37 miles) east of Bangkok, a popular coastal province among tourists.
"This has been one of the biggest arrests in recent years because Alexander Matusov is accused in Russia of organizing one of the most dangerous criminal gangs operating from mid-1990's till 2008 or 2009. During that time the gang was responsible for about 60 murders," Vice-Consul of the Russian embassy in Thailand, Alexey Falunin said.
Authorities added that Matusov also held several fake passports and had been travelling in and out of Thailand and its neighbouring countries under different names over the past couple of years.
